Power Cuts in Douala: Which Solar Solution Should You Choose?

In Douala, Yaoundé and many other Cameroonian cities, power cuts are part of daily life: the fridge thaws, the TV goes off mid-evening, a laptop shuts down in the middle of work, a shop slows to a crawl. Many households and small businesses are therefore looking for a lasting way to stop depending only on the grid.

Solar power with a battery is today one of the most reliable answers. But the right question isn’t “which panel should I buy?”, it’s: “what do I want to keep running when the power goes out?” Here’s how to choose.

Step 1: list what you want to power

Before looking at any kit, simply list your essential appliances:

  • lighting (LED bulbs),
  • fans,
  • TV and decoder,
  • refrigerator and freezer,
  • laptop and phone charging,
  • iron, washing machine,
  • air conditioning, if it’s part of the need.

The longer the list, the higher the kit’s power (in KVA) and the battery capacity need to be.

Step 2: pick the kit that matches your usage

As a guide, here’s what each JP Solaire kit can generally power:

Need Suitable kit
Lighting, fans, TV, laptop 2 KVA kit
Same usage + daytime ironing 4 KVA kit with 1 battery
Fridge and freezer running continuously, on top of the rest 4 KVA kit with 2 batteries or 6 KVA kit
1 HP air conditioner for several hours at night 8 KVA kit
Home or business premises with air conditioning, washing machine, food refrigeration 12 KVA kit

You’ll find the details of each configuration (panels, battery, inverter, included accessories) on the Our Kits page. For fridge and air-conditioning details, also read: which solar kit for a fridge and an air conditioner.

Step 3: think about storage, not just panels

This is the most common mistake: buying panels without enough battery. During an evening or night outage, it’s the lithium batteries that take over. A larger battery, or a second one, gives you more hours of autonomy, especially for the fridge, freezer and air conditioning.

The hybrid inverters we offer automatically manage priority: solar first, then the battery, then the grid if needed. When the power drops, the switch to backup mode is almost instant: you don’t even notice the cut.

Step 4: ask for a quote tailored to your situation

Two households with the same kit can have very different needs depending on roof orientation, hours of use or number of people. The safest way is to describe your situation and get a precise recommendation. For an idea of the panel budget, read our article on the price of a solar panel in Cameroon.
